North Sand Hills OHV Area, Cowdrey, Colorado With elevations ranging from 7,800 to 10,000 feet, this region isn't the highest in Colorado, but the North Sand Hills OHV trails are unique. It has two big sand dunes with unrestricted riding. This area serves as a weekend getaway for many people in the area because it is one of the few sand riding sites in this part of the country. The North Sand Hills OHV Area connects to two-track Jeep roads to the northeast. The roads allow access to more typical Colorado riding and higher elevations, though they aren't very challenging. Between the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, the Great Bear Wilderness and Glacier National Park. There are 120 miles of trails from roads to extremely rugged trails through the fir and pine forests.
Caution: This area has more Grizzly bears than any other spot in the contigous United States.
Bear Paw Mountains
Southeast of Havre, in north-central Montana, there's a good undeveloped, rugged and rocky trail system that uses game and cattle trails. The Bear Paw Mountains have an arid scrag pine forest. This BLM area is near the headwaters of the Milk River, but be careful to avoid private and tribal lands.
Big Belt Mountains
Situated north and east of Helena, the Big Belt Mountains are part of the Helena National Forest. With Canyon Ferry Lake anchoring the area, there are 160 miles of moderate-difficulty trails with some serious hillclimbs. The mountains have forests of Ponderosa Pine, firs and brush.
Big Sky
Situated in the Gallatin National Forest, just north of Yellowstone National Park, this southern Montana riding destination features approximately 150 miles of trails. The topography of the area ranges from heavily forested (Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir) and mountainous to gently rolling hills with meadows. By taking Doe Creek, Cow Creek and other trails, it's possible to ride from Big Sky, which butts up against the Lee Metcalf Wilderness (an area that contains about 350 miles of trails that are now off-limits to mechanized vehicles) to the famed Yellowstone National Park (off-limits to OHVs.)
Little Belt Mountains
Southeast of Great Falls in central Montana sits the Little Belt Mountains in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Here, the Montana Trail Vehicle Rider Association is working with the Forest Service to develop a trail system in the area. Right now there are about 150 miles of existing trails available for ATVing. Mountains with rocky steps dominate the western portion of the Little Belt Mountains, with rolling ridges characterizing the eastern part of the area.
White Sulphur Springs
In between the Big Belt and Little Belt mountain ranges, sits the Castle and Crazy mountain areas southeast of White Sulphur Springs in central Montana. There are 75 miles of trails of a variety of difficulty in this very rugged mountain area with large pine and fir forests. If you want technical, rocky and unforgiving trails, White Sulphur Springs can provide it.
Whitetail/Pipestone
This area, inside a triangle with Butte, Boulder and Whitehall is one of the most popular riding areas in Montana. Situated in southeasterns' Montana Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forest, this area features hundreds of miles of roads and trails (from easy to very difficult) open to ATVs. The western portion of the area is mountainous. The east has tall rolling hills and rocky ridges with open grass and scrub brush. Some of the land in the area falls under the BLM's Butte District office.
