Once again a day in the mud is a blast with the redesigned 2008 Big Bear 400 IRS 4x4. With 4WD capabilities, independent suspension, and semi-auto transmission sealed in all of the right places, it is definitely going to be a muddy season.
The simple, yet powerful 386cc air-/oil-cooled, SOHC engine inhales through a heated, semi-oval slide 33mm BSR Mikuni carburetor for seamless throttle response and excellent all-weather performance. It has a class-leading low-end and midrange power to tackle the hardest chores and toughest trails.
A constant-mesh five-speed transmission with automatic clutch, reverse and super-low stump-pulling first gear means this is one hard-working ATV. The special, compact frame design uses fewer components to reduce weight and provide lighter steering. This beast has a top of the class turning radius for maximum maneuverability on tight trails or for working with heavy equipment. The rear independent double wishbone suspension has a 5-way preload adjustment set of shocks with 7.6-in of travel. The front Independent double-wishbone suspension has five-way preload-adjustable shocks and 5.8 inches of travel.
Large-diameter ventilated hydraulic front disc brakes and a sealed rear wet brake provide plenty of stopping power in a variety of conditions. Topping off the mudder’s delight is a set of giant 25x8-12 front and 25x10-12 rear ITP Mud Lite tires giving a whopping 10.5 inches of travel.
For all of those long days in the muddy swamp, one may be concerned about the maintenance on the
machine. Yamaha has made it easier for the owner by having an easy-access, tool-free air filter box, and an automatic cam chain tensioner that reduces engine maintenance and helps extend engine life. The Mud-/water-resistant automotive-type DC power outlet powers a wide range of accessories that are needed after a long day out in the mud.
Additional comfort features include full floorboards and front and rear fenders with inner splash guards that offer excellent in-mud and splash protection to help keep the rider as dry as possible. The specially designed, thickly padded seat is widely contoured for excellent comfort. The large-capacity, water-resistant, underseat storage box provides added convenience in keeping valuables dry.
